Her New Deal

Here Comes the Sun

(Video in the middle)

It’s no secret that there were some pretty dark days before I was pregnant with Hannah–there were moments that I was sure would never end. Recurrent pregnancy loss is such a terrifying, confusing thing, and to come out of it with a child as glorious as Hannah has been nothing short of sublime for me.

I’ve never been one to listen to music. Because I can’t hear the nuances, it’s often too irritating for me, but Hannah adores it. I never developed a discerning musical taste, so she ended up listening to a bit too much Lady Gaga. I was stunned when that calmed her time after time. And then time after time. It seems we’re moving from the Poker Face days into the Musical era, so you’ll often hear tunes from My Fair Lady or Rent blasting from the computer. We all enjoy those, but they especially delight Hannah.

Lately, we’ve been enjoying the Beatles with her. My dad came of age during the height of Beatlemania, and is certainly a Beatles buff–he has all the paraphernalia and will strum his guitars to their songs for hours. You can imagine how happy he is to see his granddaughter get into them too.

When Hannah was born, she was this huge burst of light. I felt solidly myself before her birth; I knew the act of mothering would change me, but that it wouldn’t be my sole identity because I wouldn’t allow it to, but she brightened my life in so many irrevocable, indefinably beautiful ways. Everything suddenly made sense.

Today is the tenth anniversary of George Harrison’s death, so we made sure to commemorate it by listening to some of his greater works.

I hope you enjoy my little Sun bopping to a bit of Here Comes the Sun.

So cute! I love the Beatles too so I’m glad Hannah and I have that in common :) Wow, 10 years since George Harrison died, crazy

Oh, this is so sweet. Callum does similar arm-waving and floor-slapping for some music, not all. So cute!

I also love what you said about how becoming a parent brightens your life but doesn’t change your identity at the core. That’s exactly how I feel as well.

Loved the little video clip of your gorgeous Hannah. Your dad must be in his element watching his grand-daughter enjoy the music he grew up too.

They both have great taste in music – the Beatles certainly do rock!!!
